One of the most common mistakes people make in their gardens is not amending the native soil. Regardless of its natural characteristics, it does not usually contain the proper balance of nutrients, retains less water than amended soil, and has the potential to stifle root growth. Luckily, these problems can be avoided with a trip to your nearest garden center.

Aside from these common retailers, you may also have a little “mom and pop” type nursery in your neighborhood. Regardless of where you choose to purchase your soil amendments, the important thing is that you do. The native soil in LA tends to be dry and rocky, claylike, or sandy, depending on which part of the city you live in. Plants do not thrive in any of these soil scenarios.
When choosing a soil amendment, consider the make up of your native soil and what you will be planting there. My brand of choice is Kellogg, it’s what I used in the yard with my parents as a kid and I continue to use it in my current projects. I’ve always seen great results with their products.
My favorite Kellogg product, which I would advise you all to try, is GROMULCH. This combination of garden soil and mulch works wonders and I keep at least one bag of it in my garage at all times.
Other great Kellogg products include:

Kellogg offers other great products for container gardens and lawn care. The products I’ve listed above are just the most practical for normal gardening.
In addition to amending your soil, you should also consider mulching. Mulch allows the soil to retain even more water, prevents weed growth, and adds a nice finishing touch to any garden. GROMULCH works great, but there are other pure mulch options on the market. Kellogg’s XERIMULCH is one such example.
*Organic ground cover retains moisture & saves water
*Adds beauty to garden beds & paths
